Exeter University Folk Society
We are a music and dance society at Exeter University passionate about all things folk!
The folk tradition is inclusive and welcoming and we're no different. Regardless of ability or experience, if you’ve got energy, you’re perfect! The society originated as the Folk Dance Society 60 years ago- today, we not only dance, but also hold music and song sessions, run workshops and are the home of Pigasus, the FolkSoc Ceilidh Band.
We hold informal song and tune sessions in a pub every fortnight. Although many of the tunes we play are British or Irish in origin, we love to try new tunes and songs from anywhere in the world and don't mind if the link to folk music is quite loose! Sessions are a great place to come and meet us and get a taster of what we do. You're welcome to come along to just listen and have a chat if you don't play or sing.
Pigasus is Exeter Folk Society's own ceilidh band. We practise on Thursdays during term time and welcome new players of any instrument throughout the year. Although most of our ceilidh tunes are from the UK and Ireland, we play folk music from all over the world and explore different genres. As well as playing for ceilidhs, we also play at pub gigs in Exeter with more varied tunes and songs. If any singers (regardless of previous musical experience) would be interested in joining us, please come along!
